Memorial Weekend

Friday:
We celebrated Debbie's birthday.
Enjoyed margaritas and burgers on the deck.
Sunshine and the most spectacular view of the mountains.

Saturday:
I went for my first post-baby run and didn't die.
Alice spent a few hours with Nana and Grandpa.
Ben and I met up with some friends at the driving range.
Then, we had lunch at Trinity Brewing Co.
Took afternoon naps.
Had an outdoor movie night with friends.

The setup=laptop, projector, speakers, and a white sheet:
It was colder than we were anticipating.
Alice was staying warm under that blanket. :)

Sunday:

Slept in...thank you, Alice.
Heard our friend, Collin, preach.
Fired up the grill for lunch.
Hung out with girlfriends while the guys played poker.

Monday:
Alice giggled for the first time!
Ben was on top of it and pulled out his phone to record it.
(I'll post the video soon...I hope!)
Ate late breakfast with our friends, Sean and James, at the Omelet Parlor.
Afternoon nap.
Cookout and lawn games with friends.
K-group Mamas

Summary: It was a fantastic weekend!

Things Alice will never have...

1. Cashmere infant sweater. $96.00. Ridiculous on a number of levels.
2. Anything that refers to her as being "sexy". From Merriam-Webster, "sexy= sexually suggestive or stimulating". Not okay.
3. Diapers that look like jeans. We don't buy diapers. But, if we did, I wouldn't pay more for ones that look like denim. It's a diaper. It'll soon have poop in it.

4. Chocolate formula? Really!? Goodness gracious.
5. A daddy saddle. Though it would be entertaining to see Ben wearing that thing.

Alice went to bed early.
I clearly have too much time on my hands tonight. :)

2 months old

Dear Alice,
You are now 2 months old.
I can hardly believe how much you've changed in 2 short months!

You've been sleeping through the night for a couple weeks now, usually 8-10 hours.
Thank you!!

You also give us big smiles all the time.
The smiles start in your sweet eyes and then your cute little lips join in.

You love sitting propped up and being held upright.
You're very interested in the what's going on around you.

You also love when we sing to you.
Your Daddy makes up the best songs to entertain you...and me. :)

We left you with your first "babysitters" (Nana and Grandpa) yesterday.
They said you did great!
We had a fun date, but we missed you a whole lot.

You are our precious gift, Alice Claire.
We thank our Lord for giving you to us.
Just when we thought our lives couldn't get any better, you joined our little family.
We are blessed beyond measure!

Love,
Your Mommy

Granny face

My sister, Chrissy, said Alice is making a "Granny face" in the look-alike post.

Here's the picture she was referring to:

And the Granny she was referring to:

Well lookie there!
Chrissy was right!

PS- Granny reads my blog. (Hi, Granny!)
She leaves the BEST voicemails on my phone.
I must admit there have been times that I've purposely not answered the phone so I can listen to her message over and over again.
A couple weeks ago she left one where she sang a song to Alice...Alice Blue Gown, I believe.
Later, when I talked to her, she said she couldn't remember all the words so she looked it up on "that YouTube".
My Granny is hip and cool.
Now she just needs an iPad. :)

Pause.

Alice will be 2 months old in 2 days.
It's going by WAY too fast.
I want to push pause.

We did a little impromptu photo shoot yesterday.
She's smiling all the time now.
Melts my heart!
I think this is how she really feels about my paparazzi ways:

Look-alike?

People ask us all the time who Alice looks like...me or Ben.

Sometimes people say she looks "just like" me.
An hour later someone will say she looks "just like Ben".

Maybe this will help?

Didn't really help, did it?
I think she's a perfect blend. :)

Summer

I like lists.
They motivate me.
I have even added things to a to-do list that I've already done just to have the satisfaction of crossing it off.

So, here's my newest list.

Things to do this summer-

1. Make a homemade mojito

2. Go to the driving range

3. Have a Slush Puppie

4. Go to a garage sale

5. Get a treat from the ice cream truck

6. Go to the farmer's market

7. Turn 31

8. Go to the drive-in

9. Watch a sunset

10. Run the Jack Quinns on a Tuesday night

11. Take a nap in the hammock

12. Play croquet

13. Roast marshmallows

14. Make a banana split

15. Make fresh salsa using the tomatoes and cilantro from the garden

16. Have a water gun fight

17. Learn more about my camera

18. Take Alice on her first camping trip

19. Have a picnic

20. Plant flowers

21. Recreate this picture:
(I think it screams, "IT'S SUMMER!")

I'll likely add to this list as the weeks go by.
They might even be things we've already done.
My blog, my rules. :)

Ready, set, go!

The mystery of the hard boiled egg.

This is a post about hard boiled eggs.
Why?
Because I need answers.

Why is it that it's sometimes impossible to peel the shell off the egg?

For example, the egg on the left, who refused to relinquish it's shell.
Did I somehow, in the last 30 years, miss how to properly peel an egg!?

Is this what I get for being the kid who caught crayfish and lightening bugs instead of being the one who was in the kitchen making coffee cake and chocolate gravy?

Perhaps this is a result of going to a high school that did not offer Home Economics?

Can someone please help me?

Garden 2.0

Last year was the first year we planted a garden.
It was great!
I couldn't wait to get it going again this year.
(I'm crossing my fingers that we won't get any more snow!!)

Alice, Jack, and I went out this morning to get Garden 2.0 in the ground.
I bought a few plants, but most are either seeds or seedlings that were started indoors.

Here's what I planted:

My little gardening partner and her squinty smile. It was bright outside.
Actually, she was a pretty useless gardening partner, other than looking cute in her floppy hat. :)

We'll see how it does this year since I'll be tending a newborn AND the vegetation.

Random Tidbits

1. I love Saturday mornings. Here's why:

2. I ran across this in my photo library. It was only funny to me because I was in labor. Otherwise, it would've made me angry. How dare an iPhone app scream at me to REQUEST INDUCTION OF LABOR! Alice was born early the following morning.

3. Ben got me this necklace for Mother's Day. It arrived yesterday. I love it!

4. We hung the hammock yesterday. I love you, Spring!

5. Alice had her first bottle this week. (Yes, this is worth documenting.) This means I can now leave her and know she will be happy and fed. I had a pep talk with her assuring her it's the same milk she always has. She took it like a champ! She'll have another bottle tomorrow night when I leave her alone with Ben for the first time. (Yes, she's almost 8 weeks old and haven't left her yet. Cut me some slack. She's my first.)

6. We got a "new" couch! We had 2 love seats before. It always felt crowded when we had friends over. No longer! Yay!

7. I tried to get a picture of Alice's blue eyes. They're getting lighter...like her Daddy's. I love it!

8. Alice is always super smiley in the mornings. It's so fun.

9. Alice slept from 10:15pm until 6:45am when I woke her up. She's consistently sleeping 6-8 hours each night. It's freakin' fantastic!

That's all for now.

Being a Mommy

I've been a mom for 6 weeks.

My life is different...very different.

I no longer get to go to bed when I want and sleep in on Saturday mornings.
I do laundry every. single. day.
I'm still carrying around an extra 20ish pounds.
I rarely get to type, eat, or empty the dishwasher with two hands.
I haven't slept more than 5 1/2 hours straight.
I almost always have spit-up on my clothes.
I no longer get to shower, brush my teeth, wash my face, or go to the bathroom when I want/need to.
I'm now used to eating my food and drinking my coffee at room temperature.
I have entered "4 week old baby poop" into Google images.
I've never been happier!

I get to hold a smooshy, cuddly baby at 2:00 every morning.
I know that a smile makes even the hardest of days seem like the best day of my life.
I have a new favorite smell: the top of Alice's head.
I've had my heart broken by a tiny person crying from the backseat of my car.
I know the satisfaction of being able to meet my hungry baby's needs.
I have spent hours staring at a peacefully sleeping little girl.
I never knew how much joy a squeaky little baby would bring to our lives.
I've found that my love for Ben has grown by seeing how he loves our daughter.

This whole mom stuff is pretty great. :)

I have gained a new respect for mothers.
We love hard and sacrifice much.
It's the best job in the whole world!

Mother's Day!

Our moms are the best!
L to R: Kathy (my step-mom), Debbie (Ben's mom), and Jeanne (my mom)

We love y'all!

Smile!

Alice finally threw us a bone and smiled for us when we had the camera out.
We still have to work really hard to get smiles out of her.
Here are our latest efforts...
(Please excuse my annoying baby voice.)

April Showers...

...bring May flowers.
