5 months old!

Dear Alice,

I'm having a hard time finding the right words for this month's letter.
Sometimes I feel like I say the same things over and over:
I can't believe how fast the last 5 months have flown by.
We love you so much it makes our hearts hurt.
You are such a blessing to our little family!

But each month does seem to go by faster than the one before.
And each month we fall even more in love with you.
(How is that even possible?!)
Each month we are even more thankful for the blessing God gave us with you.

You are so much fun, Alice Claire!
Your smiles are contagious.
I'm pretty certain you save the best ones for Daddy.

Your laugh is so sweet.
Sometimes it's a simple, but hearty, "Haa".
Other times it escalates into an all-out giggle.

You reach for everything you see.
And once you have what you want, it goes into your mouth.

You've mastered rolling from your belly to back,
but have only gone from back to belly a couple times.

You LOVE taking baths.
I'm pretty sure you'd stay in there forever if we let you.

All in all, you're a very easy baby.
We joke that it's God's way of making sure you have a little brother or sister someday.

I love you, sweet baby girl!
And I love being your Mama.

Random Alice Pictures

I just put the pictures from my phone onto my computer.
These are some of my favorites:

-Playing on the floor

-Sometimes Alice sucks the same fingers I did when I was little.
I've warned her many times about braces.
She doesn't listen.

-Ben swings on the hammock with Alice almost every evening.
I love it.

-One day I tried to get a picture of Alice and I to send to Ben.
She kept grabbing my face. It's one of her favorite things to do these days.

-The Johnny Jump-up is a huge hit around here.
I think she likes being eye-to-eye with Jack.
He makes her laugh. :)

Today

I loved today.
There was a chill in the air this morning.
Overcast.
Dreary.
Hoodie and sweatshirt weather.
Alice and I had a lazy morning.

When she napped, I read a book.
We played on the floor.
Sang songs.
Drank coffee.
(Me, not Alice.)
Ate a muffin.
(Me, not Alice.)
It felt like a Saturday morning.

I had a few things to do.
Clean up the kitchen, vacuum, unload the dishwasher, return phone calls/emails, etc.
I just did them really fast so I could go back to pretending it was Saturday.

Later on, the sun came out.
But it never got hot.
I love that!

We went to the library.
Then went for a walk.

I tested out my new camera lens.
I'm learning.
Slowly, but surely.

Jack and Alice had their daily staring contest.
Both have incredibly short attention spans so it's a fair match.

I would have loved this day even more had Ben been at home.
He was working hard so I can stay home with Alice.
Ben is an amazing husband and father.
Loving, giving, patient, funny, encouraging, kind, dedicated.

Our evening was nice, too.
Easy dinner, long walk, Guiness, time to catch up with each other.
And to top it off, it's 8:30 and Alice is asleep.

Life is so very good.
I'm blessed.

Goodbye Summer. I'll miss you!

Things to do this summer-

11. Take a nap in the hammock

Well, I didn't really do this.
For good reason though.
There are ants on our hammock!
The ants are using it as a shortcut from one tree to the other.

So, I took a nap.
Several, to be honest.
But I took them in my comfy bed.
Some with a snuggly baby, some with my sweet husband.
I love naps.

So, I'm changing #11 to "Take a nap".
Check!

12. Play croquet

13. Roast marshmallows

14. Make a banana split

15. Make fresh salsa using the tomatoes and cilantro from the garden

Chikity-Check!

Summer 2009

Summer 2010

Another one checked off the summer to-do list.

Alice and Hudson

Cathy and I subjected our children to another little "photo shoot" the other day.
Here are some pictures from the first one.

My favorite picture of them:

"Our moms are crazy."

Happy babies!

Aaaaand they've come to the edge.

We could try to comfort them and say things like, "We'll never do this again."
But, that's not true.
We'll continue torturing them with the white onesie friend pictures.

They'll thank us one day when they show these pictures at their wedding, right Cathy? :)

Plums!

Yesterday, Carey and I made plum jam.
I would've been pretty overwhelmed trying to do it on my own while caring for Alice.
But having a friend help was perfect!

We turned about 20 pounds of these...

into these...

Over 40 jars of jam!

We're pretty proud of ourselves.
So domestic of us!

Cool Down, Compassion, Robots, and Rolling Over

Do you like my title?
I sometimes have a hard time being creative.
This is one of those times.

It's been a good week.
Thankfully, it's cooled off a bit.
It's nice to have a break from the heat in August!
I even wore a hoodie a few times.
Crazy!

On Wednesday we went to have lunch with a friend who works at Compassion.
L to R: Alice and I, Cathy and Hudson (in the stroller), Holly, Carey, and Jennifer

I made Alice a robot onesie.
Let's see what she thinks of it...

No? You don't like it, Alice?
But I even made it into a girl robot!

Oh, that's better.

In other news, Alice finally decided to show us how she can roll over.
As of last night she had done it 5 times.
(Yes, I was keeping track.)
Then, Ben and I went into her room to see her before he went to work.
Alice was just waking up.
She promptly rolled right over like it was no big deal.
I'm glad she waited until we were both there to see it.

Here's she is in action:
Wait.
First, please excuse the high pitched baby voice.
I hate that I do that.
I'm working on it.
Oh, and that's my friend Carey's voice in the background, too.
Carey and Jen came over this morning to help me deep clean for a couple hours.
Can you believe that!?
I have the sweetest friends.
My house is the cleanest it's been in a long time.
I love it.

Okay, back to the video.
Here you go.

That's all for now.
Have a wonderful weekend!
