Little Star

Saturday, April 28, 2012

She sings.

Alice sings ALL the time.
I think her little raspy toddler voice is so cute.

And don't try to sing along with her.
You'll quickly get a, "NO! Alice do it!"
She's a solo artist.

Without further ado...

I think it's obvious which child comes from TWO musically inclined parents,
instead of just one (Ben) around here. :)

First Date

Five years ago today,
Ben and I had our first date.

It turned into a marathon date.
12 hours.
Maybe it's noteworthy to include this was the first time we had met?

We met up at the Denver Zoo.
Then went to California Pizza Kitchen for lunch.
Then went to Dave and Busters to play arcade games.
Then went to a movie.
Then went to dinner and played a board game.

My friends were calling/texting to be sure I was still alive.

It was the best first date ever!

I remember thinking as I drove back to Boulder,
"I hope he liked me!"
He did.
And he still does. :)

We went out for coffee last night on a little last minute date:

Yin and Yang coffee order=
Iced caramel sugary goodness + an Americano.

We played one of our favorite games:

And today I'm wearing this shirt:
That's what I chose for our first date.
Vic, are you dying laughing right now?

I got this set of table and chairs today:

I love it because it's from Kaplan.
They make furniture for schools, so it's built to last a long time.

Here's the info:

$350.00 + shipping.
(The chairs are sold as a set of 2.)
What a deal!

Dear Goodwill,
I could kiss you on the lips right now.
Thank you for not knowing the value this table and chairs.
Love, Melissa

Alice has been running away when I get my camera out.

So when I wanted to get a photo of her mowing the lawn,
(Thank you, Granny!)
I had to be tricky.
My camera remote!
Why didn't I think of this sooner!?

(She was pushing the mower to me.)

Not the greatest photo I've taken,
but it'll do. :)

Potty Mouth, part 2

I think it's hilarious when young children try to say a word,
but it sounds like a swear word.
Love it.
Cracks me up!
But only when it's not intentional.
5 year olds throwing out the f-bomb?
Not funny.

it caught me off guard when Alice starting saying, "Oh sh!t."
I kept thinking, "WHERE did she hear that!?"
We do not have potty mouths in our home.

Then, I finally figured it out:
(I meant to cut the video off after the first 15 seconds.
So THATS why it took so long to upload. Whoops!)

PS- If you happened to watch the rest of it and noticed,
I say "kinda" under my breath when she called it "juice".
That's because it's elderberry syrup mixed with water.
Just in case you thought I was poisoning my child, or something.

PS- Here is Potty Mouth, part 1.

April's 10 on 10

Finding the beauty in our ordinary day,
Instragram style!

It's a hat day:

At the kitchen door:

MOPS Ministry Team meeting:

Thrift store find:

Playing in the basement:

My favorite toy:

Spring is here:

I found Superman on the potty:

A nice spot to read:

ten on ten button

High Five!

Alice has been into giving high fives lately.

Last night she spontaneously said,

"High five for chocolate!"

And then high fived Ben and I.

Some things I'd like to give a high five to today:

High five for coffee!

High five for Spring!

High five for nap time!

High five for not needing to make dinner tonight!

And since I can't hit "publish" without a photo:
She would wash her hands all day long,
if I'd let her.

Today was Alice's third Easter.

#1 (8 days old)

I wonder how long I can make her wear white dresses on Easter. :)

She didn't want me to take her picture:

Picking flowers:

Easter egg hunt!
Eggs found: 2

Our attempt at a family photo:

Happy Easter to all!
And to all a good night!

I dye.

(Did you catch that little Rachel Zoe reference?)

Bottomless Pit

I'm thankful for a kid who will eat almost anything we serve to her.

A Monday Night Mini-Rant

Pinterest is completely hit or miss.
To be honest, it was a lot better a year ago.
There's way too much crap on it now.

Anyway, tonight I saw this pinned:

At first I thought,
"Is this a joke? Those cookies look terrible."

Then, the comments looked promising, so I went for it.
4 ingredients, minimal prep, minimal cook time, nothing to lose.

As I'm making them, I start to think,
"There is NO way these only have 36 calories in them."
"Healthy!? I hardly think they can be called "healthy" when they contain a cup of sugar."

As they were baking I looked up a nutrition facts calculator.

Here's what the cookies REALLY contain:

Now, if you want a 35 calorie cookie, no big deal.
You just have to make 65 tiiiiiiiiiiiny cookies.
Or just eat 1/4 of a cookie.
Either way.

 Here's what mine look like:

Verdict: They were delicious!

So, if you want a quick, easy, yummy treat,
make these.

If you want a "healthy" cookie with 35 calories,
do not.

A Chicken Update

Our three hens are doing great!

They laid 17 eggs this past week!
They've been averaging 15.

(They love watching us through the window...
or staring at their reflections...
either way.)

We've found the chickens to be quite easy.
We let them out of the coop in the morning,
make sure they have food and water,
and then lock the coop once they're all in for the night.
Each week we clean out the coop, which simply consists of sweeping their poo into a bag.

(I know she looks mean, but she's not. Promise.)

Jack, Alice, and the chickens all get along great.
There are even a pair of doves that are usually hanging out in our yard, too.
It's like a little utopia.

In short,
we recommend having backyard chickens.
We should've gotten them sooner.

Before returning the helium tank we rented for Alice's party,
I filled the punch balloons we had.
Then, I tied extra long strings on them so Alice could hold them.

This kept both of us entertained for a long time that day.
