A really fun evening.

Our "small" group came over to celebrate Halloween with us.
We ate dinner together and then took the kids trick-or-treating at a few houses.

I love our neighbors!

For having 20 people over for dinner, it was a surprisingly low key night.
I loved it!

Halloween Pumpkins

Confession: Pretty much every recent picture of Alice has a bribe attached.

This one, a dum-dum sucker:

It was worth it though.

This was from last year:

Happy Halloween!

When asked, "What do you want to be for Halloween?", it was always the same answer.
"A rainbow!"

I only used what I had, so this costume cost $0.
Hooray!

Her crown is supposed to be the sun.
And the skirt is sparkly and puffy; a cloud.

I tried!
Let it be known that I'd rather spray paint something,
or assemble furniture from IKEA, than sew. :)

Playing in the leaves

We have 2 huge trees in our backyard, which makes for some fun leaves to play in.
(And not fun leaves to clean up.)

I raked up a huge pile for Alice to play in.
This is what she did:

She didn't know where to start.

So I showed her.

Ohhhhh!
Got it!

Fall rules.

Look-alike

I've had several people tell me Ben looks like Dax Shepard.
Who?

Oh, Crosby on Parenthood.
(I love that show.)

I never noticed it before, but it's true.

See!?
Kind of weird, right?

Family Photo...kind of

We thought we'd put my camera remote to use and try to snap a family photo.

This was the best we got:

Really, it's an accurate snapshot into our daily lives...
Busy toddler,
the dog always near Ben,
and a chicken always chasing Jack.

939 days old

Dear Alice,
This is a few weeks late, but you're now 2 1/2!

Here are some things we want to remember about you at this age:

-You would stay in your jammies 24 hours a day, if we'd allow it.

-You sleep in a big girl bed; a twin bed with 3 pillows and 7+ blankets.
It's like a little nest.

-Yesterday you said, "Don't give up, Mama!" when I was getting
frustrated at how long it was taking to get in the car.

-You always notice when my hair isn't in a ponytail.
Even you recognize its rarity.

-You love your babies and enjoy taking care of them.

-You love jumping and get amazing air for your tiny stature.

-When I ask you what you want to be when you grow up,
you always respond with, "Trees!"

-New favorite color= pink.
I suppose it was bound to happen eventually.

-You still say you dream about chickens...
every single time we ask.

-You love asking if we remember things.
"Mama, remember when we went swimming?"

-You generally sleep 12+ hours at night and take a 2-3 hour nap each day,
though you always act like it's a surprise when I say it's time to go to bed.

-You love pretending to be animals and singing songs.

-You are very in tune with people's emotions, often asking if we're feeling sad/happy/angry/frustrated/etc.

-I love when you say, "You're my best friend, Mama."

-Current interests: hot air balloons, rainbows, Halloween decorations, the moon,
swinging, watching kitten videos on YouTube, preschool, and markers.

We adore you, sweet Alice!
You make us laugh all the time.
We love your tender heart and spunky spirit.

Love, Mama

What we've been up to these past couple weeks:

A naughty day:
(PSA- "washable" markers from the dollar store are not washable...took 3 days for it to fade.)

My family came in town to visit us.
It was so fun getting to see them.
I should've taken more pictures!

Building with my dad:

Indoor swing fun:

A spontaneous trip to the zoo...

Trying to pet the orangutan:

Weighs as much as a Black and White Colobus:

She finally fed the giraffes!
We've been going to the zoo regularly since she was 2 weeks old so this was a big deal!

A little update

Lots of people have asked, so here's the latest...

The little guy went to live with a new foster family on Friday.
While we were sad to say goodbye, we feel really good about the family.
They have 3 older girls who are super excited about having a baby in the home.
Also, one of those little girls had VERY similar reflux issues and didn't really sleep for the first 2 years.
His new foster mama knows what to expect!

I've gotten 10 hours of sleep the past two nights and feel human again.
Hallelujah!

We also received a call Thursday night for a little girl who was born that day.
I immediately said yes!
Seemed like a perfect placement for us.
However, the caseworker had already contacted a family before she received our home study.
Though we were told we were "the perfect family for her", the other family decided to take her.
I was super, super sad.
Super.

But, we're moving on,
trusting God's plan for our family.
Trusting there is another little one who needs to be in our home.
So, we wait.

Again, we aren't doing foster care just to grow our family,
(as far as we know, we can have more bio babies)
but we are certainly open to adoption if that's the Lord's plan for us.

While we wait, we sleep. :)
And we spend lots of time with just the 3 of us.

We went to breakfast this morning for our little celebration.
We high-fived each other saying, "We took great care of the little buddy! Good job Alice/Mommy/Daddy!"
Then, we went to the park to play for a long time.
It was a really nice, relaxing morning.

So, there you have it!
The latest installment of what's going on in our unpredictable lives.

10 on 10...kind of

First of all, thank you guys for your prayers.
That means the world to us!
We had another rough night (up from 1am-3:30am), but we had a good day.

Here's my pseudo 10 on 10:
(more like, 7 in 1)

Trying to find the beauty in the ordinary moments in the midst of sleep deprivation.

Pretty socks from Costco:

Calabaza Pura!
Yes!
What to bake first...

Fall mantle is my favorite.
(note to self: next time move the school bus)
Oh! And can we all take note that I sprayed the brass strips on the fireplace?
Every time something brass gets spray painted, an angel gets her wings.

Homemade iced pumpkin latte:

I can't post pictures of Thing 2, but I can show you these...
His cute Charlie Brown shirt:

His faux-hawk:

And his dimply knuckles:

This is hard.

It happened.
Our first, "I don't think I can do this" moment.

We have a 7, almost 8, month old little guy with us.
Respite care, with the possibility of a placement.
He's been with us a total of 7 nights so far.

Our days are pretty good.
He's seriously one of the cutest kids I've ever seen.
He smiles, giggles, and army crawls all over the place.

But the nights...
"Hard" doesn't even start to describe it.

Nights when he's up 3 times is considered a good night.
He was up 7 times Saturday night.

This is not a new thing for him.
This has been going on since he was born heavily drug exposed.

Last night was the hardest.
He went to sleep, then woke up 30 minutes later.
Inconsolable crying.
We. tried. everything.

I've never felt that degree of helplessness/failure/discouragement/frustration before.
Exactly 1 hour later, he finally fell asleep.
He was up 3 more times, waking for the day at 5:30.
And Alice was up twice.
Not fun, my friends.

I found myself praying that God has a better family for him than us.
I'm not quite back to the "Lord, if he's supposed to be with us, please make that happen." prayer,
but I know I'll get there soon.
Typing that was hard.

So, that's my little update.
This is really hard.

I'm thankful God's mercies are new each day.
I'm also thankful for coffee.

Friends and Fam, if we don't respond to texts, calls, emails or seem short when we do,
this is why.
Please be gracious to us in our severe sleep deprived state.

PS- Let it be known that I am certain his prior foster family are saints.
We've been dealing with this for 7 nights.
They did it for 7 months.
Saints!

Friends

I love that these two will someday say,
"Our moms met in a Bradley birthing class when they were pregnant with us."

iPhone 5

Lots of people like to hate on the new iPhone.
(My sweet husband included.)

But, I got mine yesterday and I love it!
(Sold my old one on Craigslist for the same amount I paid for a new one. Score!)

I use it for about 10% phone calls.
10% texting.
10% web/applications.
70% capturing memories.

My old phone's camera was poo.
Almost every picture was blurry.

But, look what I caught today:

Notice the leaves in the air. Love.

Please no "she needs a baby brother/sister" comments.
Can't handle that today...or tomorrow...or the day after that.

These two will be partners in crime in no time!

Yes, I know there are plenty of phones out there that take as good/better photos.
I'm still partial to iPhones. :)
